The Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by 193 countries, including Norway, in 2015, and comprise 17 goals and 169 targets.

The local and regional government sector has a key role to play in terms of achieving the goals. It is estimated that 65% of the 169 targets cannot be achieved without extensive involvement or co-operation from local and regional authorities.

An increasing number of Norwegian municipalities have produced their own plans in relation to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In a survey carried out in 2018, 84% of municipalities surveyed stated that they regard the Sustainable Development Goals as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to their municipality.

As a long-term partner to Norway’s municipalities, we wish to support their work on the Sustainable Development Goals through both our knowledge and financing solutions.

The Sustainable Development Goals on which we have chosen to focus in particular are linked to our corporate social responsibility priorities for 2019. We have also mapped our green loan portfolio to identify links between our financing of green lending and the Sustainable Development Goals. For more information, see our Impact Report for 2018.
