Flood protection of the Narud waterworks

The Brumunda river in Ringsaker municipality is referred to as one of Norway's best trout rivers. But the river can also present challenges for the local community.

Ice passage and flood water

Narud waterworks is located right next to the river. In the case of ice and flood water, the waterworks are very vulnerable. Ringsaker municipality is in the process of securing the waterworks against potential damage.

This is how the waterworks must be secured:

  1. Establish a suitable and reinforced low point in the road above the waterworks. In this way, flood water on a detour further up the river can find its way back before it reaches the waterworks.
  2. Upsize the culvert through the road and clean up and protect against erosion a small stream. In this way, ice and flood water will be safely led back to the river above the waterworks.
  3. Establish a withdrawn flood embankment locally around the waterworks. The floodwall secures the waterworks if the other measures are not sufficient.

These measures prevent major and expensive interventions in the river itself. The edge vegetation along the river must also be left untouched. Edge vegetation is important for the fish in the river, but also for the waterworks; the vegetation can retain much of the ice that comes down the river.

Flood protection of Strandvegen

Ringsaker municipality must floodproof the lower and last part of the Brumunda river, a total of approximately 450 metres. The river sides must be raised where they are too low in relation to the design flood. The river sides must also be protected against erosion and thresholds must be built and biotope measures must be taken in the river.

In addition, a side channel will be opened up to the lake in the mouth area, to improve the water quality.

Interconnected network of hiking trails

The municipality will also extend the existing pedestrian and cycle path along the river promenade. The road is extended from the center down on both sides. In the end, there will be a continuous network of hiking trails from the center down to the hiking trails along Mjøsa.
